Project Description
This Lynnfield project focuses on reworking an existing single family home to better support how the owners will live in it, anchored by a new master suite addition and targeted interior renovations. The addition is planned as a true extension of the house, giving the home a dedicated primary bedroom with its own bathroom and closet space, something the current layout does not provide.
Inside the existing footprint, select areas of the home will be renovated to improve circulation and reduce the compartmentalized feel of the current layout. A key part of the scope includes potentially relocating the kitchen to the rear of the home, allowing it to better connect to the yard and main living areas. The project also includes the option of adding a rear deck, creating direct access to outdoor space and reinforcing that connection.
The end result is a home that feels more intentional, with a stronger relationship between indoor and outdoor living spaces and a layout that better reflects how the owners will use it day to day.
Design Approach
The design begins with how the addition connects back to the existing structure. The layout is adjusted so the transition into the new master suite feels natural, with aligned floor levels, consistent ceiling heights, and window placement that relates to the original house.
Relocating the kitchen to the back of the home is approached as a central organizing move rather than just a swap of rooms. It allows the primary living spaces to orient toward the yard and creates a more functional connection to the proposed deck. Interior renovations focus on targeted changes, including opening key walls, improving sightlines, and updating finishes where it has the most impact.
The deck, if constructed, is positioned to connect directly to the kitchen and living areas so it functions as an extension of the interior and supports everyday use.
Challenges
A primary challenge is integrating the new master suite into a structure that was not originally designed to accommodate it. This requires careful coordination of structure, rooflines, and circulation to avoid awkward transitions and ensure the addition feels fully connected to the home.
